I was quite disappointed because the Phoenix is attractive and well-maintained and I wanted the food to be good but I was unimpressed. When the last dish was picked up, the obligatory fortune cookies were delivered along the bill. The waiter vanished for long periods of time but the bus boys hovered constantly, racing to pick up dished before we were done. Shrimp with pea pods was quite well received. Mongolian Beef was tasty but the meat seemed oddly soft, as though tenderized. As we were still eating the starters, out came the main courses again. Lao Peng You’s fresh dumplings arrive in a hot and sour broth. The crab rangoon was excellent, my wife liked the pot stickers (I didn't). When we answered yes, the entrees returned somewhere and we waited another 5 or 10 minutes before the appetizers appeared. The waiter asked if we wanted the appetizers prior to the entrees. After a modest amount of time, out came the entrees we had also ordered. We ordered appetizers (pot stickers and crab rangoon). Food and service left a lot to be desired. Very attractive restaurant compared to others in Chinatown, brightly lit and rather modern. We visited on an early Saturday evening and were seated by a window in the main dining room. Not that it matters, but, the overwhelming majority of diners at the Phoenix appeared to be of Asian ancestry, perhaps offering a clue to would be diners - for what that's worth, as an aside. Be sure to review their full menu before you order - as it's tremendously deep and varied. If you can't easily make it to the Luk Yu Tea house in Hong Kong, the Phoenix is likely to be among the best that the Midwest has to offer. By the time we finished and departed, the entry foyer was jammed and the line was out the door and down the stairs. If you want to dine on the weekend-days I'd strongly recommend reservations.
